Offham Primary School

 Religious Education

Our Curriculum Intent for Religious Education

  • To learn about the core beliefs of Christianity and other world religions (Hinduism, Islam, Judaism.)
  • To engage and enthuse children in learning about other cultures which are different from their own, with an aim of broadening their world view and awareness of diversity. We hope that children develop a sense of inclusion and become welcoming, compassionate members of our community.
  • To encourage children to reflect on their own spiritual and moral beliefs while respecting the rights of others to differ.

Teaching and Learning in Religious Education (Implementation)

At Offham, we follow the RE today scheme of work which closely aligns with the statutory requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

Across each Key Stage, children will cover three strands of RE: believing, expressing and learning. Each term the children will focus on a key enquiry question, exploring various themes such as community, celebration, beliefs and stories.

Planning for Religious Education is based on 2 targets:

  1. Learning about Religions
  2. Learning from Religions

Learning about religion includes enquiry into and investigation of the nature of religion, its key beliefs and teachings, practices, their impacts on the lives of believers and communities, and the varying ways in which these are expressed. It also includes the skills of interpretation, analysis and explanation. Pupils learn to communicate their knowledge and understanding using specialist vocabulary.

Learning from religion is concerned with developing pupils’ reflection on and response to their own experiences and their learning about religion. It develops pupils’ skills of application, interpretation and evaluation of what they learn about religion, particularly to questions of identity and belonging, meaning, purpose and truth and values and commitments, and communicating their responses.

The Intended Impact of RE Teaching and Learning at Offham

By the end of Key Stage 2, children will have studied the key beliefs, principles and stories of Christianity in depth. They will also have explored and be able to discuss the religions of Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.

Children will have a good understanding of the diverse world around them and will be able to confidently express their own personal and moral beliefs. They will have developed the skills to question, evaluate and interpret others world views and be able to agree or disagree respectfully.

Does my child have to join in Religious Education

RE is a statutory subject in all schools in England, except for those children withdrawn at the request of their parents. (Education Act 2002, section 80). It is parents’ legal right to withdraw their children from Religious Education. If you wish to withdraw your child from any part of RE please contact the school office to speak to the Headteacher.
